Training, training and more training for Gary Guller.

Sunday: 21 February 2010:  What a great week, bunch of miles, a great experience with wonderful, kind folks in Florida for the Round Table Event I was invited to speak at - able to get some miles in whilst visiting, before the audio visual check/rehearsal and another session for two hours, prior to my evening presentation event. Spending quality time now in Encinitas, California, just signed a couple of gear contracts for the next year - and my dog, Emmy, came out for the first 8.25mile run of the day, with my pack at same weight as it will be for the 25th Marathon des Sables  - having short break, then out for 15 miles before meeting friends for a pint at the local brew house. Yum.

Planning to spend the next week, getting the ratios (carbs, hydration aids, vitamins, protein) as acurate as possible in addition to the miles. I am headed to Austin, Texas to speak and meet as many folks as possible, at the FIFTEENTH ANNUAL HALL OF HONOR AWARDS BANQUET - I am really excited about this!

Thank you to Anne at Newton Running, my friends at Multisports, Clif, Oakley and personal coaching advice of Sir Roch Frey. And for all the others that train from the old school. Merci beaucoup.

And much thanks of course to my corporate sponsors, that hire me, book me and fund me - without them, none of this would be possible. I thank you, the foundation thanks you - and I'm glad to know that there are good folks out in the global corporate arena that try very hard to make positive contributions and create better opportunity for others.  I will make you proud!

Mt. Everest Summiter Gary Guller to Race Across Sahara: Funds Raised at the “The World’s Toughest Stage Race” to Benefit the Christopher & Dana Reeve Foundation

Mt. Everest Summiter (with one arm) Gary Guller today announced he will participate in the 25th Marathon des Sables, a 250km (155 miles) race across the Sahara desert in April. Gary is doing this to raise awareness and critical funds for the Christopher & Dana Reeve Foundation.

Encinitas, CA, February 13, 2010 --(PR.com)-- The Marathon des Sables will cover 250km/155 miles (in sections approximate to 25, 34, 38, 82, 42, 22 km) run over 6 days - equivalent to six regular marathons. That's a speed of between three and 14 km an hour for competitors. Adding to the challenge, competitors have to carry everything they will need for the duration (apart from a tent) on their backs (food, clothes, medical kit, anti-venom kit, sleeping bag etc). Water is rationed and handed out at each checkpoint.

Gary Guller is participating as member of Team Reeve, the athletic fundraising program of the Reeve Foundation.

“The freedom to explore is a freedom everyone should have, regardless of their ability or disability. We must find a cure for paralysis, period,” says Gary Guller.

Competitors have to deal with extreme heat, different types of terrain, sandstorms and potentially hazardous insects and animals in the desert. Some of the longer stages will keep participants on the move well into the night. Guller, 43, will leave for Morocco on March 28. The Marathon des Sables, begins April 2.

Peter T. Wilderotter, president and CEO of the Reeve Foundation, stated, “We are very excited that Gary chose to support the Reeve Foundation through his grueling endeavors. We wish him the best of luck and will be following his journey closely.”

After setting this record, he went on to scale the peak, reaching the summit on May 23, 2003, and becoming the first person with one arm to summit Mt. Everest. Later the next year, Gary lead an expedition to the summit of the world’s sixth highest mountain, Mt. Cho Oyu, located in Tibet. Gary has gone on to become a trusted keynote speaker and personal executive coach. Gary is active internationally advocating for the potential of all people, especially those living with a disability.

Gary Guller History:

Gary was born in Britain, and grew up in the Southeastern United States.
Guller began climbing in the Appalachians in his early teens. He quickly moved on to more technical mountains throughout the US and soon set his sites on the bigger mountains of the world. In 1986, while Guller and two close friends were climbing, all three plummeted down a hard icy face more than 1,500 feet. A rescue team found the group three days later. One friend had died; Guller and the other were evacuated to hospitals in the US.

According to Dr. Allan H. Friedman, Professor and Chief at Duke University Medical Center’s Division of Neurosurgery, Guller’s neck was broken and “the nerve roots going to the left arm were pulled out of the spinal cord”, resulting in paralysis of his left arm and shoulder. In the two years following the accident, Guller underwent intensive rehabilitation and surgery, which were unsuccessful. Guller made the difficult decision to have his paralyzed left arm amputated. http://www.garyguller.com/

And...for all of those living with Spinal Cord Injury Pain. I am with you!

News from MdS - In october,, Mr Patrick Bauer was with his "fine" team of patrollers. Setting off to survey the area for the creation of the “famous” 25th MDS course, we were able to glean a comment for future participants:

"Exclusively for the http://www.darbaroud.com/ website, I can reveal and confirm what numerous competitors have imagined for the 2010 edition! Yes indeed, the course, which is still made up of 6 stages, has been slightly extended to reach a total of 250 km - the 25th anniversary requires this! The itinerary will be packed with the most beautiful sites in the Saharan provinces. The menu will include dunes, mountains, dried up lakes, regs, oases and ... more dunes!"

Thank you. Gary Guller
